A hot sauce bottle designed to sprinkle perfectly every time
Most sauces pour. Edmund McIlhenny first shipped Tabasco in 1869 in cologne-type bottles with sprinkler tops, made to give a few drops.

The branding lesson
Edmund McIlhenny grew his first commercial pepper crop in 1868 and the next year sent out 658 bottles of sauce, packed in small cologne-type bottles with sprinkler fitments. The brand explains why: the sauce “was concentrated and best used when sprinkled, not poured.” Today’s 2-ounce bottle still has a tiny opening made to an exact size.
