One surprise push notification a day, for everyone at once
Most apps time their alerts to suit each user. BeReal sends everyone in a time zone one alert at a random hour, with two minutes to post.
The branding lesson
Once a day, at a different time, BeReal sends everyone in a time zone the same “Time to BeReal” push notification. A two-minute countdown starts, and users shoot one photo with the rear and front cameras together. Friends’ posts stay hidden until users share their own, and a late post shows how late it was.
